General Info Besides the area around the mouth of the river Neretva, the county comprises the narrow coast belt from Pelješac peninsula (north-western part) to the fertile fields of Konavle (south- eastern part). A number of islands lie along the coast of the county, from Korčula, Lastovo and Mljet in the west, continuing with the Elaphite group of islands from which three islands are inhabited- Koločep, Šipan and Lopud. The chains ends with Lokrum, which is situated in the immediate vicinity, right in front of the old city port. The city of Dubrovnik is the most southerly Croatian town and has mediterranean climate.The varied geomorphology of the region – steep rocky coast, deep coves, sandy beaches, small fields, high mountaines which in places come right to the sea, numerous islands, rich vegetation and exceptionally clear sea – all this makes the region very attractive. Dubrovnik,built of beauty and artistic tradition, is a place of liberty and independence. Dubrovnik has a lot to show, its cultural tissue is enriched by monuments of culture and works of art, this city-state,city-monument,city-museum and city-theatre has cared for all its material riches from the very first day of its existence until the present, and always yearns for thruth and beauty. While staying in Dubrovnik in 1929., George Bernard Shaw said: "If you want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik" . |
