Gastronomy Coastal cuisine is typically Mediterranean, using a lot of olive oil, garlic, fish and herbs. Meals often begin with risotto or ham (pršut) with cheese and salted olives. Regarding brandies, Croatia is famous for its herbal brandies (travarica), cognacs (vinjak) and liqueurs such as maraschino, a cherry liqueur made in Zadar, prosecco, a sweet dessert wine and pelinkovac, a herbal liquer.
